AI founders love frictionless design. Every click, every delay feels like a risk. But when your system is inherently unpredictable, a little friction can create safety.

Take ChatGPT’s text confirmation prompts (“Are you sure you want to clear the conversation?”). That micro-interruption signals that the system understands stakes. It gives users a moment to reorient. The same goes for “regenerate” buttons, undo states, or revision histories — they all tell users, You’re in control here.

Removing friction at all costs can backfire. If users feel like they can’t undo or verify, they won’t explore. When they feel safe experimenting, they do more, and learn more. That’s how trust grows.

The right kind of friction isn’t a roadblock; it’s a safety rail.

3. explainability Is a UX problem

You can’t separate explainability from design. A technical team might measure it as “interpretability,” but users experience it as clarity.

When a system generates an answer, the user should be able to ask, “Why this?” and get a simple, understandable response. Even a basic “Based on recent patterns in your data” can make an opaque process feel sensible.

The danger isn’t in being wrong — it’s in being unreadable.

In human conversation, people forgive mistakes when they understand intent. AI works the same way. If users understand why a system responded a certain way, they’ll forgive the occasional error. Without that understanding, even perfect results feel untrustworthy.

AI products often miss how emotional the user experience really is. When a system acts “intelligent,” users expect it to feel intelligent — not smug, not robotic, not condescending. Tone matters.

Designers of conversational AI already know this, but it applies across interfaces. Even a B2B dashboard can feel emotionally attuned if it’s written with empathy for the user’s cognitive load.

The most trusted products aren’t the most perfect — they’re the most predictable. That predictability comes from feedback loops that make users feel like their input matters.

If a user corrects an output, acknowledge it. If they reject a suggestion, show that you learned from it. These small acts turn a black box into a visible, evolving relationship.
